There are more than 300 childcare centers in The Hague, and 150 of these are playschools, or peuterspeelzalen, often part of a primary school, designed to help children prepare for primary school.
They offer children from 2.5 to 4 years of age the opportunity for creative play with other children under the supervision of professional teachers several times a week, with a typical group lasting 2.5 hours. Some peuterspeelzalen will only accept children who are toilet trained.
Some nursery schools are a so-called voorschool, or preschool. At preschool special attention is given to learning the Dutch language.
Peuterspeelzalen have to be registered with the municipality. You can find a complete overview of all the registered peuterspeelzalen in The Hague in the Register Peuterspeelzalen.
Parents pay a contribution towards the costs for their child in the playschool, determined by the school and their income level.
