Plans for biomass power plant

Published: 15 July 2011 Modified: 19 September 2011

The Municipal Executive has ordered a study into the possibility of using waste as a renewable energy source.

The Hague has 23,560 tonnes of biomass available for energy, approximately 25% of the total amount of biomass. The rest of the biomass is not suitable or can be used in a more efficient way, such as for animal feed.

The amount of suitable biomass in The Hague is equivalent to the gas consumption of 4,600 households. In the City Region of Haaglanden it is calculated that some 657,518 tonnes of biomas is available. The municipality hopes that this amount is sufficient for the construction of a regional biomass power plant which can generate electricity.

More CO2 in 2010

The Municipality of The Hague emitted much more CO2 in 2010 than the previous year, according to data from the municipality. CO2 emissions increased more than 50%.

According to the Municipal Executive (college van burgemeester en wethouders), the higher CO2 emissions were caused by increased energy use in municipal buildings partially due to the extreme cold last winter. Another cause was the Haegheflor nursery.
