New design for Spuistraat in 2011

Published: 01 October 2010 Modified: 13 May 2011

The Spuistraat and adjoining streets (Vlamingstraat, Venestraat, part of Achterom and Kettingstraat) will be redesigned starting in 2011.

Spuistraat

The project will be combined with replacing part of the sewer pipes and will take six months. Because the project involves a busy shopping area, the work will take place outside of shopping hours in order to limit the inconvenience for the shops and their patrons.

According to Deputy Mayor Marjolein de Jong (City Centre), ‘The Spuistraat is an important shopping street in The Hague’s city centre, where many chain stores are located. The new design for the street will make the city centre even more attractive to shoppers and visitors.’

Work in the evenings

The street will be covered with so-called manganese paving, which can already be found in many streets in the city centre. The street will get a new water drainage system lined on both sides by a narrow bronze strip, giving the street an historic feel.

Inspections have revealed that the sewer pipes need to be replaced in the Spuistraat, Vlamingstraat, Venestraat, part of Achterom, part of the Kettingstraat and part of the Laan.

In order to meet the needs of the shop owners, the municipality has decided to conduct the work in the evenings and during the night. Work will start on last shopping evenings at 22.00 hrs. Delivery trucks will be able to load and unload during the regular permitted times (from 5.00 to 11.30 hrs. and in the weekend from 6.00 to 11.30 hrs.).

The street will be covered during the day to ensure that the area remains accessible to shoppers and delivery trucks.
