The Municipality of The Hague has teamed up with neighbourhood associations to create a new design for the busy Groot Hertoginnelaan. The design reinforces the street’s allure as an historical avenue.
The original plan was to redesign only the portion of the Hertoginnelaan between the Carnegielaan and Stadhouderslaan. As a result of a citizen’s right of initiative (burgerinitiatief) submitted by residents, the planning was altered to include the entire street.
The street will be transformed from a busy and chaotic speedway into an historical avenue with a large row of trees in the central reserve. The trees now standing close to the houses will be replanted in the middle of the street, freeing up the view of the historical facades.
Dedicated cycle paths will also be placed on both sides of the street, increasing the safety of cyclists. The traffic lanes will be narrowed to one lane per direction instead of two.
