Neutelings Riedijk Architects was selected as the winning design for the international competition for the new dance and music centre on the Spuiplein in The Hague.
Neutelings Riedijk Architecten was chosen because it provided accommodation for the Nederlands Danstheater, Residentie Orkest, Royal Conservatoire and the Stichting Gastprogrammering in the best way.
The selection committee described the design by the architectural bureau 'a promising, logically constructed concept, which seeks a new and contemporary balance between the scale of the historic city centre and the skyscrapers of the adjacent Wijnhavenkwartier'.
The committee said that the dome above the building was a real plus in more ways than one. Both of the halls in the dome can be used independently of one another but can also function as one large hall. Thanks to the dome, the building offers unprecedented flexibility.
In evaluating the submitted designs the committee paid particular attention to the relationship between the building and the Spuiplein.
It is still uncertain whether the new Cultuurforum on the Spuiplein will actually be constructed given the current economic conditions. The Hague Municipal Executive will take a decision on the building's future in the coming time.
