Natural playground to open in Zuiderpark

Published: 16 August 2010 Modified: 05 October 2010

The natural playground in Zuiderpark will officially open on 15 September. However, children up to age of 15 years are invited to take part in a contest to think up a new name for the playground.

New playground

You won’t find any standard equipment like slides and swings in the more than 4,000 square metre playground. Children will have to entertain themselves with what they find in nature. They can horse about in the water, sand and mud.

The new play paradise is located at the edge of the large field in Zuiderpark between two patches of woods. Children can play hide-and-seek there and while away the time building their own fort.

You will find a bridge which leads you to a lookout tower as well as a separate area for children under 6 years where the water is shallower. There are willow huts, different water reservoirs and waterfalls.

Natural surroundings

Wildflowers growing around the natural playground attract insects such as butterflies and bees. Berries ripening on the nearby trees attract birds. Visitors can also pick juicy blackberries and raspberries and find fragrant flowering plants such as lavender and herbs like rosemary.

Name contest

The natural playground doesn’t yet have a name. The Municipality of The Hague is calling on all children to think up a great name for it. Participants in the contest can win free tickets for the Totally Kidz Halloween Party on 21 October and the winner will also get backstage passes to meet all the performers at the party.

Send in your name before 4 September to: communicatie.stadsbeheer@denhaag.nl. Make sure to mention‘prijsvraag natuurspeelplaats’ and include your names, address, telephone number and age.
