Monumentenzorg (The Historic Monuments Preservation Section) forms part of the Department of Urban Development, and has been drafting and implementing the policy on historic monuments on the instructions of the municipal administration since 1977.
The Historic Monuments Preservation Section ensures that cultural-historical values are taken into consideration when planning all changes in the city. Historic monuments in The Hague dating from before 1945 have been listed and are now protected.
Besides the original medieval city centre and the urban expansion carried out in the 19th and early 20th centuries, people are now starting to appreciate and devote attention to architecture and urban development carried out between 1945 and 1965.
In order to give more publicity to our valuable built heritage, the Historic Monuments Preservation Section provides publications on a regular base. The ‘VOM’ series features several subjects in the field.
The section also takes part in the ‘Cultuurmenu’, a programme of heritage lessons for all groups in primary education. These lessons contribute to a sound basis for culture education.
