Metro to Rotterdam in just 30 minutes

Metrolijn E

Published: 16 August 2010 Modified: 20 October 2011

The RandstadRail connection between the central train stations of The Hague and Rotterdam starts up service on 17 August. Passengers will be able to travel from the centre of the one city to the centre of the other in just 30 minutes on Metrolijn E.

Until recently the RandstadRail travelled between The Hague’s central station and Rotterdam Hofplein. The new railroad track will now have a direct connection to Rotterdam’s metro system, including the brand-new Blijdorp (zoo) metro station located 18 metres under the ground. A 2.4-kilometre tunnel was built to connect Blijdorp to Rotterdam’s central station.

The RandstadRail connection between Rotterdam and The Hague is not yet complete. The line will be extended to include Rotterdam Zuid in the coming year.

The number of passengers on the line is expected to increase sharply thanks to the improvement. Some 11,000 passengers now make use of the service, but this number is expected to more than double by 2014. Additional stations will also be constructed in the new Vinex neighbourhoods.

Passengers will have to use an OV chipcard on the new metro line.
