In mid-September 2009 the Municipality of The Hague kicked off its new Accessibility (Toegankelijkheid) campaign. The goal of the campaign is to promote the accessibility subsidy to companies which make their building or facility accessible to physically handicapped people.
With the idea that people with a handicap should be able to fully participate in society, the municipality is encouraging public buildings and facilities to become as accessible as possible, also for handicapped people.
According to the new measure, a subsidy will be given for the construction of a lift, handicapped restroom, widening a passage for wheelchairs and using tactile paving. There will also be courses given for (restaurant) staff about how they can best serve people with a physical handicap. The subsidy will pay a maximum 50% of the total costs (up to € 25,000 per calendar year).
To gain publicity for the new subsidy measure, advertisements will be placed around the city. There will be a special information day organised in November.
