Leiden University (1575) is the oldest university in the Netherlands and has an enrolment of about 18,000 students. About 10% of the total student population of Leiden University is made up of international students from all over the world.

There are two locations of Leiden University: the alma mater in Leiden and the second location in The Hague, Leiden University – Campus The Hague. There are nine faculties: Archaeology, Arts, Creative and Performing Arts, Law, Medicine, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Science, and Social and Behavioural Sciences.

Together the faculties offer more than 80 degree programs. These include a diverse range of legal specialisations as well as areas such as Astronomy, Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences, Political Science, Western Languages, (Art) History and numerous Asian, African and Amerindian languages and cultures.

Leiden University has a Science Park for the faculties of Medicine, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences. The other faculties and libraries are spread throughout the town. The University Library contains more than 3 million books and periodicals, including a unique collection of manuscripts and maps.

Language of instruction

Most of the (post)graduate programs (MA/MSc, LL.M., MBA and MPhil/PhD research programs) are taught in English. In addition, several Language and Culture programs are taught in the language of their subject such as French, German, Italian and Spanish. This allows students from all over the world to study in Leiden and obtain a degree in one of the many areas of excellence of the university.

Most BA/BSc degrees are currently available only in Dutch. But in 2010 Leiden University College The Hague started in The Hague. This college offers a three-year Liberal Arts & Sciences programme in English for a select group of excellent and highly motivated students from around the world.
