Sometimes a signature needs to be legalised. The municipality will check whether the signature on a document is truly your own.
When a signature is legalised, the mayor confirms the authenticity of a signature on a specific document.
Once your signature has been legalised, you may hand in a guarantor’s letter, or proof of sponsorship and/or private accommodation (bewijs van garantstelling en/of particuliere logiesverstrekking). You may also need a legalised signature, for example, to arrange an inheritance abroad. You can find more information about the Proof of Sponsorship on the websites of the IND and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
To obtain legalisation, you must visit the municipal desk in person. The official who will verify your signature needs to watch you signing your name.
Anyone in a situation that requires a signature to be legalised.

The legalisation of your signature is done at the municipal desk while you wait.
Visit the desk of the Department of Public Service at one of the sub-municipal offices and bring along a valid identity document.
