Koninklijke Schouwburg

Theatres in The Hague

Published: 07 June 2011 Modified: 02 February 2012

The Koninklijke Schouwburg (Royal Theatre) is one of the oldest theatres in the Netherlands and is considered the most important podium for international performances.

Koninklijke Schouwburg

The theatre presents exceptional international productions which are outside the scope of its regular programme. With these unique shows it is adding foreign accents to the theatre's repertoire, including performances by its own production company Het Nationale Toneel and other theatre companies as well as cabaret, musicals and family shows.

The Nieuwe Haagsche Schouwburg opened in 1804 in a city palace dating from 1766. Following a huge renovation project from 1997 to 1999 a modern theatre emerged. Despite the alterations the theatre was able to preserve its original 19th century character.

Het Paradijs

Located on the top floor of the Koninklijke Schouwburg, Het Paradijs has for years been known as the breeding ground of modern theatre. This flat-floored studio theatre is also a podium for exceptional international plays and playwrights. The close distance between the audience and the actors gives every performance an extra dimension.

Business Events

The Koninklijke Schouwburg offers much more than just great stage performances. Whether you want a classical or a modern ambiance for your event, the Royal Theatre has the foyer for you. This monumental building, originally constructed as a city palace, is now the perfect venue for receptions, conferences or dinners in a truly unique setting.
