Kijkduin coast being made safer

Coastal Reinforcement Project

Published: 29 October 2010 Modified: 30 November 2010

At the beginning of November work will begin on the Kijkduin coastline by Solleveld and Kijkduinpark (Zuiderstrand 1 and 2). The Delfland Water Board and Rijkswaterstaat are making the coast safe for the coming 50 years by widening the dunes and beach. The Zuiderstrand 1 access point will be closed from November 2010 to April 2011.

Kijkduin coast

A sand supplementation project, similar to the one in Scheveningen, is being carried out in Kijkduin in order to enlarge the dunes and beach. The dunes and beach will also be redesigned to extend the beach access points, lay cables and pipelines for the beach pavilions and plant beach grass.

Parts of the beach will be temporarily closed to ensure safety. The Zuiderstrand 2 access point will also be closed for a time. Work is expected to be completed by 1 April 2011.

Delflandse Kust Info Centre

Starting in November the Delflandse Kust Information Centre will reopen during the weekends. You can visit the information centre on Saturday and Sunday from 12.00 to 17.00 hrs. The information centre can be found just south of the Kijkduin boulevard.

Westduinpark gets wider beach

Starting in January 2011 sand will be sprayed onto the beach near the Westduinpark between Kijkduin and Scheveningen Harbour. The dunes there are already high and wide enough. The beach access points in the area will get new steps and concrete plates between November and April 2011. The work should be completed by 1 April 2011.

New situation

The Delfland Water Board and Rijkswaterstaat have been working on reinforcing the Delflandse Kust since the end of 2008. The dunes and beach have already been widened by ’s-Gravenzande, Ter Heijde, Monster and Kijkduin.

The rock barriers, or groynes, are being buried in part or in their entirety under the sand. This is having an effect on the sea currents. Swimmers and people doing watersports need to beware.
