The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) is a United Nations court of law dealing with war crimes that took place during the conflicts in the Balkans in the 1990s.
The Tribunal brought about a lasting change in international law when it held the leaders of the former Yugoslavia - Milošević, Karadžić, Krstić – accountable for the atrocities committed in their territory in the 1990s.
The Tribunal set a powerful precedent with its judgments on genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. It has shown that a criminal’s position in society can no longer protect him from lawful prosecution.
Prosecuting war criminals and giving a voice to their victims it has proved that peace and justice can go hand in hand.
