Itching to join in on the Dutch ice skating fever when waterways freeze over? You can already get prepared by taking lessons at one of The Hague's ice skating clubs.
The speed-skating club HVHW is almost 40 years old and has produced a number of champions, including Bart Veldkamp, Ben van der Burg and Niels Kerstholt, who took part in the Winter Olympics in Turin in February 2006. The club has approximately 450 members and welcomes children as of the age of 7 years. Lessons are given on Saturday evenings on the 400-metre track in De Uithof.
Everybody can learn figure skating, even if you have never skated. You can skate with the Haagsche Ijsclub Houtrust for fun or also do competitive skating. The HIJH was founded in 1937 and has had a few champion skaters (for example Joan Haanappel). It offers lessons on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons in De Uithof.
The Haagse Schaatsschool offers lessons for beginners as well as advanced skaters for children between the ages of 4 and 12 years old at De Uithof. Classes are given on Thursday afternoons. For more information, visit the website of the Haagse Schaatsschool.
The ice dancing club IJsfun is a club for children to learn skating techniques for ice dancing and figure skating. Children are trained by KNSB certified coaches and have the opportunity to earn an official KNSB diploma. At the end of each season (October to March) the children give a performance, which attracts hundreds of visitors. Ijsfun uses the indoor skating hall at De Uithof on Saturday mornings.
