In the Historical Museum of The Hague you will become acquainted with the colourful history of The Hague. The museum organises changing expositions as well as all kinds of activities.
The Historical Museum of The Hague, the Haags Historisch Museum, is
located in the historical heart of The Hague. The museum is housed in
the former archery house of St. Sebastian’s guild along the Hofvijver and dates from 1636. The civic guard of St. Sebastian used these quarters for parties and meetings.
From the late 18th century, following the dissolution of the civic guard guild, the building was used as a hotel, courthouse and museum. The Historical Museum of The Hague has been here since 1986. Visitors can treat themselves to paintings of Hague cityscapes, silver objects, dollhouses and even a tongue and toe.
The museum has a special building called 'the Salon' where children can discover what life was like in The Hague around 1900. Children can take the 'lost sounds' quiz and look at the automobile and the medieval toilet in the almshouse. They can also take a seat at a school desk from a hundred years ago and use real objects from then.
During the weekend the museum's salon is entirely for children! You will be received by an enthusiastic newspaper reader from 1904. Using five television screens he will show you the revolutionary inventions and changes in his time. The film also looks at the misery and poverty of the ordinary man. Every Saturday and Sunday afternoon there is a scavenger hunt in the museum with Simon the Spider, which takes you past films and games.
The museum is accessible with a wheelchair.
