Everyone living in the Netherlands must be able to show proof of health insurance coverage.
As of 1 January 2006, a new insurance system was put in effect, offering the same health care coverage for everyone, thus dispensing with the ziekenfonds, or national health care system.
To read more about these changes visit the website of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport.
There are approximately 40 health insurance companies in the Netherlands. This number is declining as mergers and acquisitions have taken place over the last ten years. This process is still going on.
