Extra € 5 million for city maintenance

Published: 09 December 2011 Modified: 30 March 2012

The Municipality of The Hague will invest an extra € 5 million to catch up on unfinished work on roads and green areas.

The money will be used to improve the quality of the main roads, repair street furnishings, manage green areas in various neighbourhoods and replant trees lining the city streets. The activities will be coordinated as much as possible with road maintenance work.

‘We have to slash the budget in The Hague but in this case we are investing a lot of money,’ explained Deputy Mayor Sander Dekker (Finance and City Management). ‘We think it’s very important that the city is in good shape and that the public space is clean and safe. This makes it an attractive city to live in, to start a business and to visit.’

The main roads, key to the city’s accessibility, have suffered from the past two cold winters. For the time being an additional € 1.5 million will be used to catch up.

Other sources of irritation among residents are the broken benches, loose tiles, holes, potholes and the tree roots which have crept up in the streets, sidewalks and bike paths. A programme to clear these problems up will begin next year. Each year one neighbourhood in each city district will have its turn. The city should be caught up in about five years.
