Dunea (formerly Duinwaterbedrijf Zuid-Holland) supplies drinking water to 1.2 million inhabitants in 19 municipalities in The Hague and Leiden region.
The water originates from the dunes between Katwijk and Monster, which are used as natural filters for river water initially transported from the Dammed Meuse or Afgedamde Maas at Brakel near Gorinchem to the Bergambacht pumping station.
There it undergoes initial treatment before being pumped to the dune area.
Via a system of infiltration beds, this water gradually finds its way down into
the dunes, where it mixes with sedimentary water. After around two months the
resultant ‘dune water’ is pumped up and then processed to form drinking
water.
Dunea manages and protects the reclamation of drinking water in the beautiful dunes between Monster and Katwijk, enjoyed annually by 1 million visitors.
When moving into a new house it's generally not necessary to contact the water company. Billing changes are undertaken with the rental contract or mortgage.
