Deputy Mayor Sander Dekker is The Hague's alderman for Finance and City Management as well as the Segbroek district.

Deputy Mayor Sander Dekker

Sander Dekker was born in The Hague in 1975. He earned a master’s degree in public administration at the University of Leiden in 1999. From 1999 to 2002 he was enrolled in the PhD programme at the University of Leiden. His research was focused on the field of public safety and criminal justice.

Sander’s work experience includes various research positions including with the Crisis Research Team at the University of Leiden, the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Kalsbeek Commission of the Lower House of Parliament, and visiting researcher at the Centre for European Politics, Economics and Society at the University of Oxford. Since 2003 he has worked as a lecturer in public administration at the University of Leiden. Sander has authored numerous publications in the areas of law, management and public administration.

Until 1997 Sander was member of the JOVD (Youth Organisation Freedom and Democracy) regional board for the province of South Holland. In 1998 he switched over to the Hague-based VVD party where he was member of the Werkgroep Liberale Politiek (Working Group on Liberal Politics). He now serves in the VVD party committee on justice.

Since May 2003 Sander Dekker has been a member of The Hague City Council. From August 2004 until April 2006 he was faction chairman of the VVD party within the City Council. From April 2006 to May 2010 he was The Hague's alderman for Youth, Education and Sport.

In March 2011 Sander was appointed Chairman of the Board of the Rathenau Institute, which promotes the formation of political and public opinion on science and technology.

In his free time Sander enjoys listening to music and likes to spend his holidays hiking in the mountains. He is unmarried and resides in The Hague.
