Leiden University College The Hague will become an international academic institute for highly motivated and outstanding students from the Netherlands and abroad. Such so-called ‘university colleges’ can also be found elsewhere in the Netherlands, in Utrecht, Amsterdam, Maastricht and Middelburg.

The college in The Hague was established by Leiden University and will offer a broad academic programme with a focus on peace, (international) justice and sustainability. The programme will fit in well with the international character of The Hague, which is home to a number of international tribunals such as the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.

The three-year bachelor’s degree programme will be given in English and will prepare students for a master’s degree programme in Leiden and at other Dutch and foreign universities.

Speedy completion

The university and municipality asked DUWO to develop and manage the student accommodation for the students of University College The Hague. DUWO has had experience in building student accommodation in a short span of time at other locations. Due to the lack of student housing and the explosive growth in the number of students – Dutch as well as foreign –  such projects are often necessary. DUWO developed a similar project in Amsterdam.

Unit system

The apartments in The Hague will be built on the Leeghwaterplein near the The Hague University (Haagse Hogeschool) and the Hollands Spoor train station. DUWO is using a unit system for the project similar to container apartments built elsewhere in the country. The exterior of the complex will get an attractive facade. The complex will have four stories with 122 independent student apartments measuring about 23 square metres. The complex will also get a lift, a common area, laundry facilities, a bicycle lock-up and a shared garden.
