The Hague was chosen to organise the Cross Triathlon World Championships in 2013. This was announced during the annual meeting of the International Triathlon Union (ITU) in Beijing.
Cross triathlon is the rougher younger brother of the Olympic triathlon and involves the completion of three continuous and sequential endurance events: swimming, mountain biking and a cross run. It is the fastest growing discipline within the triathlon sport. Earlier this year the European Triathlon Union (ETU) chose The Hague to host the Cross Triathlon European Championships in 2012.
This is the second time a Dutch city was chosen to host a world championship triathlon event. In 2008 Almere hosted the world championships in long distance.
Deputy Mayor Karsten Klein (Sport) is enthusiastic about the decision. ‘This election underlines once again that The Hague is truly a city for professional sports. The sea, beach and dunes present a fabulous challenge to cross triathletes. The natural surrounds combined with the hotel facilities, attractive city centre and the hotels and restaurants in a large international city like The Hague make The Hague the best location for this world championship.’
The international one-week sporting event will be held at Kijkduin Beach Resort in 2013.
