Busy weekend for Scheveningen

Traffic advisory in effect

Published: 04 June 2010 Modified: 04 June 2010

There is a good chance that Scheveningen will be closed to traffic tomorrow due to a combination of summer weather, road works and the Bon Jovi concert. The beach resort will be inundated with sunbathers as well as an estimated 50,000 people attending the Royal Beach Concert in the late afternoon.

Organisers of the Royal Beach Concert have invested a great deal in keeping Scheveningen accessible. A large number of concert goers will arrive by coach; organisers have created 250 pick-up spots throughout the Netherlands.

The buses will disembark at the Norfolk Terrain. From there the concert goers can walk from the harbour to the beach. The buses will be able to zip through the city without any hold-ups because concert organisers have mapped out a special bus route and a number of streets will be temporarily closed to traffic. More than 150 traffic wardens will be hired for the day to ensure a good flow of traffic.

Extra trains and trams will also be available before and after the concert. Some 16 extra trams per hour will travel between The Hague’s Central Station and the beach. The special trams will ride as express trams to the concert, stopping only in Scheveningen, and will leave every three minutes.

Travelers be warned: this weekend rail service between The Hague’s Central Station and Rotterdam’s Central Station is suspended due to maintenance work on the track.

Special parking area

Concert goers attempting the trip with their car will probably not be able to drive all the way to Scheveningen. There will be special parking areas available at the ADO Den Haag stadium and Duindigt racetrack with shuttle buses which will take passengers to the Norfolk Terrain. There will be signs placed along the motorways around The Hague with directions to the football stadium and racetrack.

Circustheater Scheveningen

Visitors to the musical ‘Mary Poppins’ at the Fortis Circustheater Scheveningen need not worry. The Nieuwe Parkweg, which goes straight to Scheveningen and to the theatre and cinema, will remain open.

Largest stage of Europe

The Royal Beach Concert was given the green light last week once all the safety issues were straightened out with the Municipality of The Hague. Within a few days a whole village arose, complete with changing rooms, VIP rooms and TV screen towers. The largest stage of Europe will be built for the concert, measuring nearly 80 metres wide.
