Authorise someone to vote in your absence

Published: 30 September 2010 Modified: 16 May 2011

If you are unable to vote in the elections personally, you may apply to vote by proxy. This means you nominate someone else to vote on your behalf.

Volmachtbewijs

What is it?

If you are unable to vote in the elections personally, you may apply to vote by proxy. This means you nominate someone else to vote on your behalf.

How does it work?

You give a voter in The Hague permission via a proxy vote. This person must be eligible to vote in The Hague.

What are the conditions?

The nominated person (i.e. the proxy) must show valid proof of identity (original or copy) of the authorising person (i.e. the principal). Without this proof of identity, the proxy will not be able to vote on behalf of the principal.

For whom is it intended?

Anyone who is eligible to vote.

What will I need?

Your voting pass.

How much will it cost?

This service is provided free of charge.

How do I apply/What do I need to do?

  • You give a voter in The Hague permission to vote on your behalf (i.e. a proxy vote). Complete and sign the reverse of your voting pass. The proxy (the person who will be voting on your behalf) must also sign the pass. This converts your voting pass to a proxy voting pass. Give your converted voting pass to the person you have nominated to vote on your behalf.
  • Do you want to nominate someone (for example because you will be on holiday during the elections) but you have not yet received your voting pass? Then make use of the green form entitled 'aanvraag volmachtsbewijs' (proxy application form). This form enables you to appoint a proxy, who will then be sent a proxy voting pass. Remember that this permission is not reversible, so you will not be able to cast your vote in person.
  • You can submit your completed form to any of The Hague's 8 sub-municipal offices or send it to the Office of Elections.
