Arranging a funeral

Published: 30 September 2010 Modified: 01 October 2010

If a person dies in the Netherlands, this is registered in the municipality in which the person died. In the Netherlands this formality is almost always arranged by a funeral director.

You can apply for a death certificate at your local sub-municipal office. There are times when you might need a death certificate. For example, if your partner has passed away the pension insurance company might ask for this.

You can collect a copy of the death certificate (uittreksel) at any of the sub-municipal offices. Remember to bring along valid proof of identity.

This undertaker, based in The Hague, provides English-speaking services and can arrange the formalities for funeral transport abroad.
