Apply for driving licence after loss or theft

Have you lost your driving licence? Or has it been stolen? Apply for a new driving licence or a replacement at the municipality.

What is it?

If your driving licence has been lost or stolen, you may apply for a new or replacement driving licence at the municipality. A replacement driving licence is valid until the same date as your old driving licence.

How does it work?

• You apply for a new driving licence.
  Are you younger than 60? Then your new driving licence will usually be valid for 10 years.
• You apply for a replacement driving licence.
  This driving licence is valid until the same date as your old driving licence.
  Please note: Do suitability requirements apply? Then you need to be retested.

What are the conditions?

Are you applying for a new driving licence? Then the same conditions apply as described under Renew driving licence.

Please note: You may not drive without a valid driving licence. You may only resume driving a motor vehicle when you have a replacement or new driving licence.

For whom is it intended?

• Any citizen of one of the EU or EEA member countries or of Switzerland, or
• Any person with a valid residence permit

What will I need?

• the Dutch police report stating that your driving licence has been lost or stolen.
• passport photo
  Strict rules apply to passport photos. For example, the photo needs to be in colour and has to be taken straight from the front. A list of all the requirements can be found in Passport photo requirements (pdf).
• proof of identity

The municipality will verify the authenticity of your identity documents.

How much will it cost?

Applying for a driving licence: € 45.25.
Expedited application procedure: an additional € 33.50.
Penalty for lost document: an additional € 35.80

Please note: These fees must be paid upfront when you submit your application.

How long will it take?

5 working days.

Do you need your driving licence urgently? Then you may make use of the expedited procedure, in which case you will receive your licence after one working day (if the application is submitted before 14.00 hrs.). Additional charges apply to this procedure.

Has your driving licence been stolen or lost several times? Then you may not make use of the emergency procedure. In this case, your application will take longer than usual.

How do I apply/What do I need to do?

• Visit the Department of Public Service desk in person to apply for your driving licence. You may make an appointment beforehand if you like, by phone or via mijnDenHaag.nl.
• You will need to collect your driving licence in person from the sub-municipal office where you submitted your application. This has to be done within 3 months of submitting your application.
