Did you know that there are more than 2,000 organisations in The Hague which depend upon the work of volunteers? This number includes not only organisations exclusively run by volunteers but also social services like hospitals and nursing homes where volunteers fulfill an important supplementary role.
Volunteer work (vrijwilligerswerk) is about helping other people in your community by doing odd jobs, giving training courses, conducting nature walks, planning activities, organising events, and recruiting member and/or volunteers.
Volunteering is a good alternative to paid employment. You will meet new people, build your self-confidence might learn the language, get to establish a network, contribute to a good cause, learn more about Dutch society and gain valuable work experience here, which may help you on your way to paid work.
In addition to these intangible advantages, volunteers in The Hague also enjoy:
HOF, Promotie Haags Vrijwilligerswerk, is the supporting organisation for volunteer work in The Hague. HOF takes care of administration, provides advice and information on rules and regulations, and support for volunteers and voluntary organisations. The (Dutch only) website gives an overview of vacancies and volunteer projects.
Stop by HOF’s office opposite the Grote Kerk for a list of job vacancies. Remember that a little bit of Dutch goes a long away!
