Campaign to promote smoke detectors

Safety news

Published: 31 August 2009 Modified: 19 November 2009

One-third of households in The Hague have no smoke detectors. And residents who do have a smoke detector often forget to check whether the battery is still functioning, according to The Hague Fire Department.

During fire prevention month in October, The Hague Fire Department will be visiting various houses of worship in The Hague to promote the use of smoke detectors.

Statistics demonstrate the importance of this campaign. Approximately 85% of the people who perish in fires do so from smoke inhalation rather than from the fire itself.

Safety advisors provide a number of additional tips: hang a fire blanket in the house and close the door if a fire starts in order to slow its development. Create an evacuation plan.

And 25 October is National Smoke Detector Day.
