The City Region of Haaglanden is stimulating the use of natural gas with the campaign ‘Haaglanden operates on natural gas’. The campaign launched in mid-2008 aimed at encouraging petrol station owners, companies and motorists to switch to natural gas.
Natural gas vehicles are more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly and release 75% less toxic soot. They offer a lower cost of ownership than gasoline and diesel cars because of lower tax rates. A natural gas tank costs approximately € 10 to fill and lasts for about 250 kilometres. This is especially attractive for companies with large fleets of vehicles. It is also better for the environment than liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
The City Region of Haaglanden is providing an € 80,000 subsidy for the first five filling stations in the region, which should lead to a good network of natural gas stations. People who purchase a natural gas powered car are eligible for a subsidy.
The Municipality of The Hague in the beginning of 2008 also appropriated a € 300,000 subsidy to facilitate the introduction of five natural gas refuelling points in The Hague. The first public natural gas station of South Holland was inaugurated in December 2006 at the Tamoil petrol station in Forepark in The Hague.
