Coastal Protection

Published: 24 August 2009 Modified: 09 September 2011

The coast of The Hague and the Scheveningen Boulevard are not only the most familiar landmarks of the city but they also protect the city from the sea. Since evidence increasingly suggests that sea levels could rise 85 cm over the course of the 21st century, coastal protection is urgently needed.

The Province of South Holland has designated six areas which no longer meet safety regulations: so-called coastal ‘weak links’. These areas must obviously be protected, whilst keeping the coast attractive for both residential and recreational purposes. This project is called the Kustvisie Zuid-Holland.

In 2004 the coastline of Scheveningen was fortified by considerably supplementing the existing sand. In order to guarantee safety in the future, further structural and sustainable measures are necessary.

In the beginning of 2008 a decision will probably be taken on the design-improvement plan for the seawall and the design for the Boulevard. The Municipality of The Hague will work together with the Hoogheemraadschap van Delfland (Delfland Water Board) in order to fortify the seawall and ensure spatial quality.
