The Hague lobbies for European Police College

Published: 28 October 2011 Modified: 13 December 2011

With a bit of luck a new European agency may be coming to The Hague thanks to the efforts of a Euro parliamentarian in Brussels.

For years there have been managerial problems at CEPOL - European Police College, which is now located 70 km from central London. For MEP Gerben Jan Gerbrandy this was a reason to lobby to move the agency to The Hague. The European Parliament will now commission a study to look at the costs of moving the agency.

According to Gembrandy, who is originally from The Hague, CEPOL - European Police College would find a perfect home in The Hague given that Europol and Eurojust are already here.

Approximately 60 people work at the European Police College, which brings together senior police officers across Europe with the aim to encourage cross-border cooperation in the fight against crime and maintenance of public security and law and order.

Deputy Mayor Marjolein de Jong (Culture, City Centre and International Affairs) said acquiring the European Police College would be a great asset for the city. ‘It would of course mean more jobs and new expats are also a blessing for local businesses.’

De Jong says that the municipality already has an office location in mind right next to Europol in the International Zone.
