The number of residents in The Hague grew by more than 3% over the 2005–2010 period, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands (Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek). The city's 2010 murder rate remained the same as in 2009.
The Hague had a so-called double attractiveness, appealing to both Dutch people who move here from other provinces and foreign immigrants. The Hague, with 3.5% growth, is one of the strongest growth areas in the Netherlands.
On 1 January 2010 the city had more than 489,000 inhabitants.
The murder rate in The Hague in 2010 at seven remained the same as the previous year, according to research by Elsevier.
Approximately 170 murders were committed in the Netherlands in 2010, a slight decrease from 2009. In Amsterdam the number of murders decreased from 32 in 2009 to 16 in 2010 and in Rotterdam the murder rate dropped from 20 to 14.
A striking difference in 2010 was the sharp rise in domestic murders ending with the perpetrator committing suicide.
