Kraamzorg (postnatal care) is available to assist the midwife during the at-home birth and to help mother and baby at home in the days immediately after the baby is born.
Generally the kraamzorg, or postnatal care nurse, will visit your home for eight days, caring for you and your baby and giving advice on health, care, diet and hygiene for your baby. You can also request help from the kraamzorg with domestic duties (laundry, light housecleaning, etc.), and you can decide how much help you will need, varying from a few consecutive hours per day to full days, with or without domestic help.
Kraamzorg must be requested at the beginning of your pregnancy. In some cases the insurance, or verzekering, will determine which kraamzorg organisation you can register with, sometimes you can choose your own. Therefore you must first contact your insurer to establish which organisation(s) you may contact and, in case, they'll be able to provide you with addresses and telephone numbers of kraamzorg organisations in your area.
Costs will be dependent on your insurance policy.
The kraamzorg care organisation will need to ask you for details necessary to process the invoice from your insurer. They are not permitted to make any further use of this information and they and all their employees are obliged to adhere to a confidentiality agreement.
