International Students

Published: 09 February 2012 Modified: 14 February 2012

If you come to study in the Netherlands, you may need an entry visa. Should you plan to stay in The Hague longer than three months, you'll also need to register with the municipality.

Visa

Depending on your nationality and your reason for coming to the Netherlands (study, internship), you may need an entry visa. To help you determine whether you need a visa and which procedures you need to follow, check the Student Visa Wizard on the website of Nuffic, the Netherlands organisation for international cooperation in higher education.

Registering with the municipality

If you plan to stay in The Hague for longer than three months, you need to register with the municipality. You'll need to make an appointment by contacting the municipality. In many cases your college or university will help you with the registration procedure.

Under Registration procedures you’ll find an explanation about to whom the procedures apply and how they work.

Moving within The Hague

If you’re already living in The Hague, there are several ways to notify the municipality of your move:

  • in person at the desk of a sub-municipal office
  • in writing
  • digitally

To notify the municipality of your move online, you will need a DigiD code. DigiD stands for Digital Identity, it's a personalised login code that you can use for a number of your affairs, including with the municipality. If you don’t have a DigiD yet, you can request it at www.digid.nl. Keep in mind that the application for a DigiD takes about five working days.

Under Report your move you’ll find information on informing the municipality of your new address with links to the forms you may need.

If you're moving to another municipality, you can read about how to report this under Relocation within the Netherlands.
