  • Start your search early.
  • Take into consideration that the student housing market is pretty crowded during the summer. This is the period during which most first-year students start looking for a room.
  • Tell everyone you meet that you’re looking for student housing in The Hague.
  • A room is often found fastest through word of mouth, through friends, family and acquaintances.
  • Register with Duwo, the specialist in student housing, or one of the housing corporations as early as possible.
  • Check the bulletin boards at supermarkets and colleges for available rooms and hang your own note up while you’re there.
  • Place an ad in the local newspaper, for example, De Posthoorn.
  • Don’t be too critical of your first room. Often you can move to a better room in the house.
  • Don’t fixate on that one great neighbourhood in The Hague, but look farther afield. Neighbourhoods which are considered 'less desirable' in The Hague may be perfectly suitable for somebody on a student budget and loads more lively and fun as well.
  • Check the website of the Belastingdienst (Tax Department) to see if you are entitled to a rent benefit. This can help defray some of your rental expenses.
