The Abdijkerk was built between 1238 and 1250 as the chapel of a convent founded by Machteld van Brabant, the wife of Floris IV, Count of Holland. The Abdijkerk is the oldest building in Greater The Hague.
There have been a lot of changes, both big and small, brought about to the church. The first change was in 1580, when the remains of the church were handed over to the Reformed Church as a gift. Prior to that time the church had been plundered and eventually destroyed by beggars and the Spaniards.
For more than 400 years, the Dutch Reformed Church has held church services in this building every Sunday.
