Swine Flu

The Hague is not immune to the Swine flu, officially called ‘New Influenza A (H1N1)’. Dutch Health Minister Ab Klink had earlier decided to urge people in certain at-risk groups to have themselves immunised free of charge.

Everyone who is eligible for free immunisation has already received notification. The immunisation comprises two injections. The first round of injections started on 9 November 2009.

On 9 November the minister also named a number of new at-risk groups which may be immunised free of charge:

  • The biggest group comprises babies and children aged between 6 months and 4 years. This means children who were born before 23 May 2009 and after 23 November 2004.
  • Babies who were born on or after 23 May 2009 will not be immunised. In order to prevent them from getting the flu, the families of babies younger than 6 months may have themselves immunised.
  • Finally women who are more than 14 weeks pregnant are advised to have themselves immunised.

Everyone who falls within these new at-risk groups will receive an invitation to be immunised in the week of 16 November. The invitation will set out where and when you should go to receive your injections. Immunisation of the new groups starts on 23 November. The GGD (Public Health Department) in The Hague and the GGD South Holland West are responsible for the immunisation programme for The Hague and surrounding area.
