Sherlock Holmes, an English pub in The Hague’s Archipelbuurt, was named a winner in the category 'The Best Pub/Bar in the Netherlands' of the 2010 Best of British awards. The awards were launched in 2009 by The Daily Telegraph and British Airways so that British expatriates could nominate the restaurants, clubs and bars that they feel best represent Britain abroad.
The winners of the six categories were announced on the basis of online voting conducted by The Telegraph from January till May 2010. More than 550 British venues around the world were nominated and some 110,000 people took part in the voting.
Upon receiving the award, owner Klaas Jassies said, 'When Tinka Portegies and I took a decision to own a pub ten years ago, our goal was to be the best expat pub of The Hague. The result of the competition speaks for itself. We are delighted and would like to thank everybody who voted for us.'
Sherlock Holmes
Established in 2001 Sherlock Holmes is located at Sumatrastraat 314, in close proximity to the head offices of several international organisations such as Shell, CB&I and Europol. This makes the pub especially popular among expats as well as the local community.
According to Andrew Berry (www.MakeHollandMyHome.com), a Sherlock customer since 2002, 'It’s already like home for many expats with home cooked foods like steak & kidney pie, shepherd’s pie and of course fish & chips. People know each other here… It's like an expat’s extended living room.'
