Deputy Mayor Peter Smit

Deputy Mayor Peter Smit is The Hague's alderman for Transportation, Binckhorst and Vlietzone as well as the Leidschenveen-Ypenburg district.

Peter Smit was born in 1956 in Laren. He completed his graduate studies in history at the University of Utrecht in 1981. Thereafter he followed a postgraduate program in public policy at the University of Twente from 1987 to 1988.

In the 1980s Peter worked for the VVD (Dutch Liberal Party) faction in the Dutch Lower House and was involved in creating the policy on health insurance and euthanasia legislation. He then joined the public affairs office of ICN in The Hague until 1990 and thereafter was partner in Stallen & Smit, partnership for environmental policy until 2000.

From 1998 to 2003 he was a member of The Hague Municipal Council for the VVD. From 2004 to 2006 he was deputy mayor of Finance, Public Space and Core Policy for the Municipality of Westland.

In addition to his work, Peter has been a member of the Permanent Scouting Committee of the VVD and through the years has served in a number of administrative positions within the VVD party. He was also the brain behind the Haagse Masterclass (2000), a sort of training course for young VVD politicians.

Following the resignation of Pieter van Woensel in February 2007, Peter Smit was appointed as The Hague's alderman for Transportation, Binckhorst and Environment until May 2010.

Peter’s hobbies include cycling, gardening and music. He is married and has lived in The Hague for 25 years.
