Iran-United States Claims Tribunal

The Iran-United States Claims Tribunal came into existence as one of the measures taken to resolve the crisis in relations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States of America arising out of the detention of 52 United States nationals at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, which commenced in November 1979, and the subsequent freezing of Iranian assets by the U.S.

The Claims Tribunal consists of nine members, three each from the U.S. and Iran, and three independent members. The case lot consists of 3,816 claims of different magnitudes.

This is the largest arbitration ever attempted and the greatest challenge ever faced by this mechanism. Due to the aura of intense political and cultural conflict which heralded its birth and the many moments of crisis which it has had to overcome, it is not possible to say when this temporary tribunal will conclude.
