Graves of historically important Hagenaars

‘Levend Verleden’ project

Published: 09 October 2009 Modified: 28 November 2011

An extensive inventory of all the cemeteries in The Hague has produced a detailed overview of the graves of historically important figures.

Oud Eik en Duin cemetary

The Municipal Cemeteries, the Bureau for Monuments and Historical Sites and The Hague Municipal Archives have placed all the graves on a map in the so-called ‘Levend Verleden’ (Living Past) project.

The overview takes you back through the history of The Hague and supports the preservation of the graves of the people who have made an important contribution to the city’s culture. It is a very valuable piece of work.

Drees, Couperus, Thorbecke

Willem Drees, Louis Couperus, mr. J.R. Thorbecke, Gerard Fieret, Martinus Nijhoff, Jozef Israëls, Betje Wolff and Aagje Deken are just a few names found in the booklet. The booklet lists a total of 161 graves of historically important people together with a short description of their careers.

Later in 2009 the project will also take stock of the graves of historical people and important historical memorial stones in the city’s churches.

The ‘Levend Verleden’ project will be forwarded to the ‘Die Haghe’ Historical Society, Friends of The Hague Society and interested educational institutes.
